Heartworms are large worms that live in the hearts and lungs of dogs. They also are found in other species — cats,
ferrets, foxes, horses, sea lions and wolves. Dogs are the most common host for
this parasite. This worm is a long, spaghetti-like worm that can be anywhere
from 6 to 10 inches in length. Heartworms are carried in a microscopic
form in mosquitoes that have bitten an infected animal. When that mosquito bites
a healthy Pet, that Pet gets heartworm. As Heartworms live in the heart
and lungs, they can cause permanent damage, even death. Heartworm disease
affects pets in all 50 States and is a year-round concern.
